Qi Xi (七夕; Pinyin: qī xī; "The Night of Sevens"), sometimes called Chinese Valentine's Day, falls on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month on the Chinese calendar; thus its name. Young girls traditionally demonstrate their domestic arts, especially melon carving, on this day and make wishes for a good husband. It is also known by the following names:

* The Festival to Plead for Skills (乞巧節; qǐ qiǎo jié)
* The Seventh Sister's Birthday (七姐誕; qī jiě dàn)
* The Night of Skills (巧夕; qiǎo xī)

Japan celebrates the festival on July 7 as the Tanabata festival (the word is cognate with the Chinese), celebrating the meeting of Orihime (Vega) and Hikoboshi (Altair). Some cities celebrate Tanabata on August 7, and others on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month on the Japanese lunisolar calendar.

Other East Asian cultures celebrate on the seventh day of the seventh lunar month of the Chinese calendar, which in 2006 fell on July 31.

The Story of Cowherd and Weaver Girl

In late summer, the stars Altair and Vega are high in the night sky over China, and the Chinese tell the following love story, of which there are many variations:

A young cowherd named Niulang (牛郎, "the cowherd", the star Altair) happens across seven fairy sisters bathing in a lake. Encouraged by his mischievous companion the ox, he steals their clothes and waits to see what will happen. The fairy sisters elect the youngest and most beautiful sister Zhinü (織女, "the weaver girl", the star Vega) to retrieve their clothing. She does so, but since Niulang sees her naked she must agree to his request for marriage. She proves to be a wonderful wife, and Niulang a good husband, and they are very happy together. But the Goddess of Heaven (in some versions Zhinü's mother) finds out that a mere mortal has married one of the fairy girls and is furious. (In another version, the Goddess forced the weaver fairy back to her former duty of weaving colorful clouds in the sky because she could not do her job while married to the mortal.) Taking out her hairpin, the Goddess scratches a wide river in the sky to separate the two lovers forever (thus forming the Milky Way, which separates Altair and Vega).

Zhinü must sit forever on one side of the river, sadly weaving on her loom, while Niulang watches her from afar and takes care of their two children (his flanking stars β and γ Aquilae).

But once a year all the magpies in the world take pity on them and fly up into heaven to form a bridge (鵲橋, "the bridge of magpies", Que Qiao) over the star Deneb in the Cygnus constellation so the lovers may be together for a single night, the seventh night of the seventh moon.

Masyarakat Jepang merayakan festival pada tanggal 7 July sebagai Tanabata Festival, merayakan pertemuan antara Orihime(Vega) dan Hikiboshi(Altair). Beberapa kota merayakan Tanabata pada 7 Agustus, dan yang lainnya pada tanggal 7 bulan 7 pada kalender Jepang.

Budaya Asia Timur lainnya merayakan pada tanggal 7 bulan 7 kalender bulan Cina, yang mana pada tahun 2006 ini jatuh pada tanggal 31 JULI!!!!!!(remember how important this day to me??? hehehe...)

Pada akhir musim panas, bintang Altair dan Vega bersinar terang di langit malam di China, dan masyarakat mengatakan tentang cerita cinta berikut ini, yang banyak banget variasinya:

Seorang pengembala muda bernama Niulang(bintang Altair) secara tidak sengaja menjumpai 7 orang bidadari bermandi di danau. Disemangati oleh temannya, the ox, dia mencuri p akaian mereka dan menunggu untuk melihat apa yang akan terjadi. Para Bidadari memilih yang paling muda dan paling cantik Zhinu(bintang Vega) untuk mengambil kembali baju mereka. Dan ia melakukannya, namun karena Niulang melihatnya telanjang, Zhinu harus setuju untuk memenuhi permintaan Niulang untuk menikahinya. Zhinu membuktikan diri sebagai istri yang menakjubkan, dan Niulang menjadi suami yang baik, dan mereka sangat bahagia bersama. Tapi Dewa Langit(dalam beberapa versi ibunya Zhinu) menemukan bahwa seorang manusia biasa telah menikahi salah satu bidadari dan ia menjadi sangat marah. (Dalam versi lain, si Dewa Langit memaksa sang bidadari kembali untuk melambaikan awan yang berwarna-warni di langit, karena dia tidak bisa melakukannya jika menikahi manusia biasa). Menga mbil jepit rambutnya, sang Dewa Langit menggoreskan sungai yang leba r di langit untuk memisahkan the true lovers forever (dikenal sebagai Milky Way, yang memisahkan Altair dan Vega).

Zhinu harus tinggal selamanya di salalh satu sisi sungai, dengan sedih melambaikan alat tenun-nya, sementara Niulang memandangnya dari jauh dan menjaga anak-anak mereka (Bintang β dan γ Aquilae).

Tapi sekali dalam setahun, seluruh burung magpies(burung berwarna hitam dan putih yang ribut) merasa iba kepada mereka dan terbang ke angkasa untuk membentuk jembatan melalui bintang Deneb di Cygnus Constellation sehingga mereka berdua bisa bersama untuk satu malam, yaitu malam ke 7 bulan ke 7.
